Petřín Funicular Returns. Prague Public Transit Company Launches Fourth-Generation Cars

After an almost two-year break, the Petřín Funicular has returned to service. Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) commenced trial operation with passengers on Tuesday, 22 September 2026. The funicular operates daily from 7:00 a.m. to 10:15 p.m., with services running every 10 minutes.
Fourth-Generation Cars
The modernization of the Petřín Funicular also includes completely new fourth-generation cars. Their design was created by Anna Marešová designers, while production was carried out by the Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group. The new cars build on the tradition of the Petřín Funicular while introducing modern technical solutions, a larger proportion of glazed surfaces, and more attractive views of Prague throughout the journey.
A distinctive feature of the new cars is their interaction when passing each other on the line. One car “winks” and the other changes the colour of its interior lighting. This playful design detail refers to Petřín as a traditional place of meetings and romance.

Complete Reconstruction of the Line
The reconstruction of the Petřín Funicular included a complete renewal of the railway infrastructure along the entire line. The construction work responded both to the long-term technical condition of the infrastructure and to damage caused by extreme rainfall in September 2024, which affected not only the track itself but also part of the Petřín hillside. The project included the replacement of rails, cable technology, and other technical equipment necessary for the safe and reliable operation of the funicular.
A Brief History of the Petřín Funicular
The Petřín Funicular began operation on 25 July 1891 as a water-balanced funicular railway. It continued operating throughout the First World War and ceased service in 1921, probably due to high water costs. Service resumed in 1932, when the line was converted to electric traction. It served the public reliably for more than 30 years.
In 1965, extensive landslides on Petřín destroyed the line. The funicular returned to operation in 1985 after a twenty-year interruption and was incorporated into Prague’s public transport system.
In September 2024, the line and the entire Petřín hillside were damaged by extreme rainfall. As a complete reconstruction of the line and replacement of the cars had already been planned, the funicular did not resume operation. This was followed by a full reconstruction of the track and the installation of new technology, including fourth-generation cars designed by Anna Marešová designers. DPP launched trial operation with passengers on 22 September 2026, almost exactly two years after the final operation of the previous generation of the Petřín Funicular.
