In Pictures: New Petřín Funicular Cars Installed on the Line

23. 04. 2026

On Wednesday, 22 April 2026, both new cars of the Petřín Funicular were successfully placed on the line. We present photographs documenting the process from their transport to Petřín to their installation on the reconstructed track.

Demanding transport of the cars to Petřín

The operation included a logistically and technically demanding transfer of equipment and the cars themselves to the area of the Abt passing loop on the Petřín hillside. The first step involved site preparation and the arrival of heavy machinery, including cranes and tractor units with counterweights used as balance during vehicle handling. This was followed by the arrival of two special transports carrying the new funicular cars from the central depot of the transport company Hanyš in Radonice.

The final phase of the transport was among the most complex. The trucks carrying the cars had to reverse along narrow and winding roads of the Petřín Gardens to the Abt passing loop located below the Nebozízek station. Due to limited space, the operation proceeded step by step – the second car waited at the transshipment point until the first car had been unloaded from the trailer and placed onto the track. Once space was available, the second car was transported in the same manner.

Installation of the cars and further work

Both cars were subsequently lifted from the trucks onto the reconstructed track using a crane. This was followed by securing the cars, connecting them to the haul rope and gradually pulling them into the upper and lower stations of the funicular. After being positioned in the stations, the protective coverings will be removed from the cars.

In the coming weeks, technicians from the Doppelmayr/Garaventa group will complete the installation of all technologies necessary for the operation and control of the funicular and carry out their inspection and fine-tuning. This will be followed by trial operation of the cars without passengers, both without load and with a load simulating a fully occupied car. The tests will also include braking tests. After completion of trial runs without passengers, negotiations and approval procedures with the competent authorities will take place, with the aim of obtaining the certificate of fitness and permission to commence trial operation of the funicular with passengers.
