Prague Public Transport begins installation of safety brushes on escalators at selected Prague metro stations

Prague, 28th February 2011 - Prague Public Transport will start installing safety brushes to be located on escalators at eleven Prague metro stations. The installation of new deflecting brushes is one of a number of new measures to increase travel safety on older escalators of Russian manufacture.

The installation of these new safety elements will begin on 3rd March 2011 and is due to finish at the end of May this year. "Over this period safety brushes will be located in 11 metro stations on Lines A and B. The deflecting brushes will be installed on a total of 48 Russian-made escalators", said Peter Sopko, Head of the Engineering Investment Dept of Prague Public Transport. The particular stations involved are: Jiřího z Poděbrad, Flora, Želivského, Florenc - B, Náměstí Republiky, Můstek - B, Karlovo náměstí, Anděl, Invalidovna, Českomoravská a Jinonice. The company's Board approved the plan to install safety brushes during the second half of last year. Implementation costs for the project will be approx 4 million CZK.

During the installation so-called deflecting brushes will be fitted to the old type of escalators. The first safety features of this type were installed last year at the Křižíkova and Florenc metro stations on Lines B and C.

The project to install deflecting brushes on escalators in the metro is one of the new safety measures being implemented by Prague Public Transport since last summer. „Deflecting brushes are a passive safety feature to increase safety on escalators. But of course we do need to be aware that escalators are only machines, and we therefore need to respect the safety rules and by doing so avoid accidents", says Prague Transport Board Chairman David Vodrážka.

To improve escalator safety Prague Transport last year implemented a project for safe escalator use, issuing an information leaflet entitled Ten Rules for Using Escalators. The campaign is currently continuing in the form of A4-sized stickers on escalators, the metrovision system (video projection in metro stations) and on the Prague Public Transport website. Prague Transport also makes repeated use of the media to appeal to all passengers, and especially parents of young children, to respect the safety instructions for the use of escalators.

There are at present 94 flights of type ET and Transporta escalators of Russian make installed in the Prague metro. Prague Public Transport maintains increased operational checks on this type of equipment, which was brought into operation from 1980 onwards.
