William Matthews Associates, the London studio which is also responsible for the designs of the London cable car or the modernisation of the London Bridge station, has become the winner of the international architectural competition for design of three stations and five supports of the planned cable car Podbaba – Troja – Bohnice.

23 applicants from nine European countries applied for the open competition, which was announced by the Prague Public Transit Company in May. The jury subsequently selected five teams whose task was to develop architectural designs for all three stations and five supports with regard to the location of the future cable car and its surroundings or natural relief.

Out of the submitted proposals, the international jury then selected and awarded three best ones. The first prize was awarded to the British team William Matthews Associates in cooperation with Boele Architects and Expedition Engineering and with the support of DCSA and Agile CE consultants.

1. place: William Matthews Associates + Boele Architects a Expedition Engineering

The Czech group ov architekti and Olgoj Chorchoj studio took second place. Third place was taken by the Austrian office ZT GmbH – Studio Innsbruck of the renowned Norwegian studio Snøhetta. Other finalists of the competition are Grimshaw International Limited from London and DWAA studio from Warsaw.

2. place: ov architekti a Studio Olgoj Chorchoj

The competition jury considers the winning design’s integrity, contextual approach and consideration of the surrounding conditions, both natural and urban, to be the key to its success. Each station has a very good chance of responding appropriately to its location by using the landscape as an integral part of the design.

3. place: ZT GmbH – Studio Innsbruck, Snøhetta

Finalists: Grimshaw International Limited and DWAA
